There are also many felt, cloth, and leather pieces inside piano actions that compress and harden with time and use. Strings get deep grooves by hitting the strings for years, and wood pieces can crack. As with cars, appliances, and anything else, piano parts wear with time. The second thing to consider is the condition of the parts in the piano. In this case, I simply replace the string for a slight fee. This does add significant tension to strings that have not been adjusted in a very long time, though, and occasionally a string will break during tuning. First, it will almost certainly need a pitch raise, but it will usually hold a tune just fine. Yes, it can! There are a few things to consider, though. Repeat this over two hundred times–it’s enough to relax previously in-tune notes back out of tune. Each string is under extreme tension, and the added tension from tightening a very out-of-tune string actually causes other strings in the piano to relax slightly. As pianos usually fall flat with time, this procedure is called a pitch “raise.” In this procedure, the tuner raises each note slightly above its desired pitch. If the piano is far enough out of tune when a tuning is scheduled, then each string must be brought close to its correct pitch. As a piano sits without being tuned, the piano slowly drifts out of tune.
